The M5 Motorway has been closed since 10:30 BST due to a serious crash involving a car and a motorbike. The accident occurred in the northbound carriageway between Bridgwater junctions J24 and J23, causing the road to be closed to traffic for an investigation.
An air ambulance was required to transport the severely-injured motorcyclist to hospital. Avon and Somerset Police report that the collision involved a silver BMW 1 Series and a black Triumph motorbike located half a mile before the J23 exit. Motorists are urged to seek alternative routes, as the northbound carriageway of the M5 remains closed.
The National Highways Authority has warned that the road is likely to remain closed for an undisclosed period of time following a major incident today. In a statement, a spokesperson advised motorists to take the designated diversion route off the M5 at J25 northbound and re-join at J23.
Meanwhile, police are appealing for witnesses after a serious incident led to the closure of one lane on the M4 near Royal Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire, reportedly due to a coach fire. Repair work continues on-site with no definitive timeline announced for when the remaining lane will re-open.
