Something interesting happened in Delhi yesterday that’s got everyone talking about politics again. The ruling party just made a move that could change things in a big way, especially down south. C P Radhakrishnan, who’s been serving as Maharashtra’s Governor, just landed one of India’s biggest political roles.
But there’s way more to this story than meets the eye.
Who is C P Radhakrishnan?
Before we dive into why this C P Radhakrishnan announcement is creating such a buzz, let’s get to know the man himself. Born on May 4, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, he’s not your typical politician who just makes big promises.
C P Radhakrishnan started his journey with the RSS when he was just a teenager and became part of the Bharatiya Janasangh’s State Executive Committee way back in 1974. That’s when most of us were probably worrying about our school exams!
He’s got a Business Administration degree and has been climbing the political ladder step by step. The interesting thing about C P Radhakrishnan is that he’s actually won elections – something that’s become pretty rare for BJP candidates in Tamil Nadu. He represented Coimbatore in the Lok Sabha in 1998 and 1999, beating some pretty big names along the way.
From Governor to Vice President Hopeful
Right now, C P Radhakrishnan is the Governor of Maharashtra, a position he’s held since July 31, 2024. Before that, he was the Governor of Jharkhand for about 18 months. He’s also held additional charges as Telangana Governor and Puducherry Lieutenant Governor during different periods.
But here’s where things get really interesting. Yesterday, BJP President J P Nadda stood up in front of reporters and announced that C P Radhakrishnan would be the NDA’s candidate for Vice President of India. This wasn’t some random decision – it came after a big meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.
“We will talk to the opposition as well. We should also get their support so that together we can ensure an unopposed election for the post of Vice President,” Nadda said, basically hoping everyone can just get along for once.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
The C P Radhakrishnan selection isn’t just about filling an empty chair. See, the current Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, resigned last month, which means India needs someone new for this really crucial position. The Vice President also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, which means they’re basically the referee when all our MPs start arguing.
The election’s scheduled for September 9, and the last date to file nominations is August 22. Given that the NDA has a majority in the electoral college (that’s the group of people who actually vote for the Vice President), C P Radhakrishnan’s victory seems pretty much guaranteed.
But that’s not really the point here.
Tamil Nadu Strategy Behind the Scenes
Here’s where the C P Radhakrishnan story gets really smart from a political angle. The BJP has been struggling in Tamil Nadu for years. They’ve tried different approaches, different leaders, different alliances – but they just can’t seem to crack the code down south.
By picking someone from Tamil Nadu for such a high position, they’re sending a clear message. C P Radhakrishnan belongs to the Gounder community, which is pretty influential in western Tamil Nadu, especially in the Kongu region. These folks are business-minded people who’ve built the state’s textile and automotive industries.
The Gounders make up about 10% of Tamil Nadu’s voters, and they often decide who wins in the western districts. Smart political move? Absolutely.
What Leaders Are Saying
The reaction to C P Radhakrishnan’s nomination has been pretty positive across the board. BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal said, “This is a very welcome step. CP Radhakrishnan is a highly learned person and understands parliamentary decorum.”
Even leaders from other parties are giving him props. TDP MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti called him “a highly experienced administrator” who’s “known for his services to society, especially the marginalised sections.”
AIADMK’s Edappadi K Palaniswami congratulated the choice, calling it “a crowning achievement for the public service and dedicated social activities” of C P Radhakrishnan.
Prime Minister Modi himself tweeted about how C P Radhakrishnan has “distinguished himself with his dedication, humility and intellect” throughout his career.
The Tamil Nadu Angle Gets Complicated
Now here’s where things get a bit tricky. C P Radhakrishnan actually visited Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on August 11. Officially, it was just a courtesy call to check on Stalin’s health. But everyone knew the real reason – he was probably trying to get DMK’s support for the Vice Presidential election.
The thing is, the DMK is part of the INDIA bloc, which is the opposition alliance. So even though C P Radhakrishnan is from Tamil Nadu, the DMK will probably stick with whatever candidate the opposition puts up.
Looking at the Bigger Picture
The C P Radhakrishnan nomination is really about the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The BJP knows they need to do something different if they want to make any impact in that state. Their previous state president got moved to a different role, which upset some people in the western regions.
By elevating C P Radhakrishnan to such a high position, they’re basically telling the Gounder community and other influential groups in Tamil Nadu: “Hey, we value you, and we’re giving one of your own the second-highest position in the country.”
Whether this strategy actually works remains to be seen, but you’ve got to admit it’s clever.

The nomination process is pretty straightforward from here. C P Radhakrishnan will file his papers before August 22, and then we’ll see if the opposition decides to field a candidate or just let him win unopposed.
Given the numbers in the electoral college, C P Radhakrishnan is almost certain to become India’s next Vice President. The question isn’t really whether he’ll win, but what this means for Indian politics, especially in the south.
Beyond the Politics
At the end of the day, C P Radhakrishnan seems like a decent choice for the job. He’s got decades of experience, he’s held important positions, and people from different parties respect him. That’s actually pretty rare in today’s political climate.
Whether you support the BJP or not, having someone with his background as Vice President probably won’t hurt the country. And who knows? Maybe his selection will actually help bridge some of the gaps between the north and south, between different communities, and between different political parties.
